This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things of the Day: The Smoking Gun goes two-for-two this week with myth debunking.
First, the site pointed out the (fairly obvious) weaknesses in the viral “sh*tty tattoo” story (namely that everything in it was fake). Now, with a bit of sleuthing, it discovered that “Bennett” — the wannabe gangstar of overnight-sensation site “Texts From Bennett” — is a fabrication of the site’s creator, 30-year-old Internet celebrity David Sheldon BKA Mac Lethal.
This, despite the fact that Sheldon says on the Tumblr blog that hosts the texts that Bennett exists and the exchanges are “100% real.”
TSG spoke with Sheldon’s dad, who said there was no Bennett, and the texts were made up by his son with the help of malapropisms borrowed from a friend.
When confronted with this, Sheldon stuck to his guns, insisting Bennett was real, but that “Bennett” was not his legal name. “You try to ruin the fun for everyone,” Sheldon told the TSG reporter behind the detective work. “We’re trying to protect the storyline.”
So Bennett is probably fake. Do you care?

DUUUUH. Followed it anyway to watch it blow up.
